Soft launch of più: a new series in Fredericton
The folks who work behind the scenes here with the Elm City String Quartet have some exciting news for people based in Fredericton. On November 23rd, we’re soft-launching a brand new series called più.
più is a new concert series dedicated to music that defies genre. più is a musical term that translates to “more,” and this is the core of the series: to encourage the creation and presentation of performances that we’d like to see more of. Ambient, experimental, sound art and contemporary classical music – più is dedicated to fostering an appreciation and audience for these art forms via presentation, community building, and creation facilitation.
Why?
After seeing how well the ECSQ’s Cello Quintet commissions were received last May, we decided we wanted an avenue to continue pursuing this kind of work, to be able to expand this beyond just string quartet repertoire, and to support others who do it too! We are still firmly in love with the classical quartet repertoire, but we believe having another space to explore and facilitate music written by people living today is important - especially because many of our friends and peers are very talented composers and artists, and deserve to have a space to have their works performed!
To soft launch the series, we’re pleased to be presenting Nova Scotia / Ontario supergroup, Scions on November 23rd at Wilmot United Church at 7:30PM. The evening will begin with an opening set by Pallmer (who is, coincidentally, Emily and Mark from the ECSQ, plus their pal Charles!). The show will also feature beautiful stage design by visual artist Katie Hamill.
We are offering our mailing list subscribers 30% off the price of advance tickets as a thank you for supporting our creative endeavours over the years!

About Scions
Scions are a new innovative experimental ensemble. The group features members from the award-winning minimalist chamber-jazz quartet New Hermitage, the Polaris-nominated drone-hymn duo Joyful Joyful, and the acclaimed producer and composer Michael Cloud Duguay. Their collaboration began at the Sappyfest music festival in Sackville, New Brunswick, in August 2022. During this event, New Hermitage and Joyful Joyful connected for the first time and teamed up with Duguay for a spontaneous improvisational performance based on his song writing. The enthusiastic response, capped by a standing ovation, solidified the ensemble's decision to pursue the project further, with Duguay deftly shifting from front-person to producer and musical director.
The 9-piece ensemble includes harp, cello, saxophone, accordion, double bass, bass clarinet, voice, electronics and guitar. For folks who attending last season’s closing concert, you’ll notice that our past guest artist India Gailey is a member of Scions! We’re very excited to share the stage with them again.
